What's going on?

I was asked this question 37 minutes ago. Here's what's going on:
  1. Without question, the most random on-demand movie of the year prize has to go to "Hamlet 2." Including the appearance of Elizabeth Shue.
  2. The last two episodes of Curb - The Bare Midriff, The Black Swan - are some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen.
  3. Alex is growing up faster than a speeding bullet. If you haven't seen him in a while, he now has a mustache and plays the guitar.
  4. COD 6 is coming out in exactly one week. I will not buy it. Maybe.
  5. About three months until LOST.
  6. I really want to play golf.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

One of the advantages of being on midnight baby duty: a ton of time to read. Which I've always loved, since as early as I was able to pick up a book.

I just finished "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." And Wao! it is. A wonderful, beautiful book. It made me laugh out loud, it made me sigh, it made me cry (...on the inside).

What initially is presented as a biography about Oscar the ghetto-nerd, turns into a multi-generational story about a Dominican family immigrating into the US, narrated from the perspective of a number of characters. I'm not a fan of overly ethnic stuff. But this is not what this book is about.

The plot is almost secondary. What makes it so unique is the voice of each of the characters, each one of them eminently believable. There is a family curse. A condensed history of the Dominican Republic (in footnotes -- that Trujillo was one bad motherfucker). And plenty of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars references to convey the essence, the mood and the struggle to someone our age.

Definitely on my top 10 list of favorite books. If you read one book this year, read this one.

At home with Alex

M and I came home from the hospital on Saturday. So far so good. Aside from the to-be-expected lack of sleep, we're slowly getting used to the cycle of feeding, burping, changing, and starting over. Alex doesn't feel like sleeping much longer than one or two hours at a time. Hopefully that'll get a little more soon. But it's all worth it. We get so excited when he coos or shows a hint of a smile or strikes a pose. And he smells so good!

Carmen is surprisingly tolerant as well, running for cover only during the loudest of cries. She does have kind of a new chagrined look about her though. Like "Really, you think that was a good idea"? She'll get over it.

We've had a little trouble with an incompatibility between M's and his blood type, so we've had to go into the hospital every day for blood tests, to make sure his slightly yellow hue doesn't change to full blown jaundice. So far his billirubin (?) count has been high but stable; today it went down to a little bit more more normal level. We'll know more after the pediatrician visit tomorrow.

M is doing well overall. The many blood tests have been hard on her (me too!), and I think she's starting to suffer from a little post-partum stress. But we'll be ok. M's mom will be around for the next two weeks; she's an enormous help. An we're getting a constant flow of the nicest emails, facebook comments, and calls... thank you guys!

Also quite entertaining are the many curious new items in our household such as as "Baby Wipes: Sensitive Skin". Really, is there another kind? Like turpentine-strength for the leather-skinned baby that craps tar? More investigations to follow.

Anyway. Back to work. I think there's a diaper that needs changing.

Hurray :-D

Vampires!

They're back! True Blood. Twilight. Made me remember the first vampire movie I ever saw when still a young lad in Germany.

Dance of the Vampires!

Fond memories, but I have no idea what it would be like watching it today... Hopefully not like watching Short Circuit after 15 years. I couldn't bear the disappointment. Then again, it's Polanski...can't be all bad. But so was The Ninth Gate. But wait, I liked that!

Hmm. Maybe the Seed should see it first and tell me how it is. Just to be safe.
